Choi Min-sik initially had reservations about the dark and serious atmosphere of the work, but expressed his feelings upon its release, saying, "I think they responded to the intent of the work." He admitted that he didn't have high expectations for a literary-style work in an era accustomed to fast-paced narratives. However, he expressed satisfaction that the characters, gripped by distorted desires, led to many discussions and heated debates and criticisms.
In the drama, Heo Mun-oh is a character consumed by a sense of failure, showing inferiority towards his successful friend Kim Su-hoon (Heo Joon-ho) and an obsession with his first love, Ahn Eun-ju (Kim Yun-jin). Regarding Heo Mun-oh, who neglects his devoted wife Jo Hyun-sook (Jin Kyung) and brings about the ruin of their relationship, Choi Min-sik interpreted him as "a character who has strayed from the ethics of an intellectual, professor, and creator," explaining that he is a character with a mix of outward ambition for success and desire as a writer. He also added that Kim Su-hoon's words became the trigger for his trauma and withdrawal.
