Kim Sung-kyu's "Off the Map" Impressions

Solo artist Kim Sung-kyu is embarking on a "new challenge" with the release of his sixth mini-album, "​OFF THE MAP," his first in three years. This album captures the journey of venturing off the beaten path to find one's own way, showcasing deepened emotions and an expanded musical spectrum.

Since his debut in 2010, Kim Sung-kyu has been active in various fields, including as a member of INFINITE, a solo artist, and a musical actor. Regarding the release of his solo album after three years, he expressed his feelings, stating, "I am so happy to be able to share an album that I prepared diligently with those who have waited." He also mentioned, "​I wanted to work with people who know me well and with whom I have good chemistry" during the album preparation process.

The title track, "When I Think of You," is a pop ballad written and composed by Kim Jong-wan of Nell. Kim Sung-kyu commented, "​The songs on this album really have (Kim) Jong-wan hyung's strong color," revealing both anticipation and pressure regarding his collaboration with Kim Jong-wan. Kim Sung-kyu was inspired to pursue his dream of becoming a singer by watching Kim Jong-wan and has received his help since his first solo album over a decade ago.

To repay the long-held wishes of his fans, Kim Sung-kyu once again asked for Kim Jong-wan's assistance. He conveyed his sincerity towards his fans, saying, "If the fans want it, I want to repay them while staying within the boundaries of what I want to do and what I can do." This album is based on the band sound that has been with him for the past five years and was completed through collaborations with people who know Kim Sung-kyu well.

The second track, "Over It," which became the starting point of the album, is a song that speaks of difficult moments based on Kim Sung-kyu's own experiences. He revealed, "​It felt like telling about difficult moments based on my experiences. The album title came to me while writing the lyrics, and once it was decided, I felt at ease." "Over It" tells the story of liberating oneself by breaking free from past relationships and memories, capturing Kim Sung-kyu's present.
