Choi Jun-yong posted a photo of himself drinking Starbucks coffee on his social media with the caption, "Coffee is Starbucks," and used hashtags such as #멸공형아 (anti-communism hyung-ah), #멸공커피 (anti-communism coffee), and #스타벅스 (Starbucks). Choi Jun-yong has previously attended rallies opposing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol multiple times, openly revealing his political leanings.

Previously, Starbucks Korea ignited controversy with its tumbler promotion event, using the phrases "Tank Day" and "Tap on the desk." It was pointed out that "Tank Day" alluded to the deployment of tanks by the martial law forces of the Chun Doo-hwan military junta during the May 18th Democratization Movement, and the phrase "Tap on the desk" was reminiscent of the 1987 torture and death of activist Park Jong-chul.

Regarding this controversy, President Lee Jae-myung criticized the event, stating, "An event called 'May 18th Tank Day' that insults the bloody struggle of the victims and citizens of Gwangju on the historic May 18th Democratization Movement anniversary." Furthermore, as the controversy escalated, Chairman Chung Yong-jin issued a public apology, stating, "We have deeply hurt the spirits of the May 18th Democratization Movement, their bereaved families, and the people," expressing his regret. Starbucks' U.S. headquarters also reportedly conveyed its official apology.
