Northeast Project Fallout: US Support for Korean Committee Reviewed

The aftermath of the Northeast Project controversy surrounding the MBC Friday-Saturday drama '21st Century Prince's Wife' continues. The Broadcasting Media Communications Committee (BMCC) announced that it is reviewing whether to reclaim the funding for '21st Century Prince's Wife,' which recently concluded. The drama was one of the selected works from the Korean drama investment showcase held in April in conjunction with the Cannes International Series Festival in France by the BMCC and the Korea Radio Promotion Agency. At the time, '21st Century Prince's Wife' was highlighted as a highly anticipated K-drama for its global expansion, being introduced to international investors and buyers. However, an unusual situation has arisen where a work that received public funding is now being considered for funding reclamation domestically.

The controversy began in the 11th episode, aired on the 15th. During the coronation scene, the officials shouted "Cheonse" (ten thousand years) instead of "Manse" (ten thousand years, a traditional Korean cheer for the king), and the crown worn by the protagonist was depicted as a "guryu myeollyugwan," used by the monarch of a vassal state, rather than a "sibiyuryu myeollyugwan," a symbol of an emperor. Viewers pointed out, "Even if the world is an constitutional monarchy set in Korea, depicting our royal rituals at the level of a vassal state is problematic." Following the broadcast, related organizations such as the Korea Creative Content Agency and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism received a flood of complaints.

In response, the production team posted an apology on their official website on the 16th, admitting, "We lacked consideration for the historical context during the world-building process." They announced that they would revise the problematic subtitles and audio for reruns, VOD, and OTT services. Lead actors Byun Woo-seok and IU also posted messages on their personal accounts expressing their "shame" regarding the controversy and apologized. Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University and Korean history instructor Choi Tae-sung pointed out the production team's lack of historical accuracy and emphasized the responsibility of popular culture content in historical awareness.

Ironically, '21st Century Prince's Wife' concluded with high viewership ratings. According to Nielsen Korea, the final episode recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 13.8%, setting a new personal best. However, separate from the evaluation of its artistic merit, the drama left a stain of historical distortion controversy. The total production cost is reported to be around 30 billion won.

The biggest current concern is whether the funding will actually be reclaimed. Since the Cannes Series joint project was more focused on attracting overseas investment and marketing support rather than direct production funding, the decision on reclamation will likely depend on the applicability of clauses such as 'social controversy' or 'damage to public interest' within the agreement. As the BMCC begins reviewing the relevant regulations, there is a possibility that evaluation criteria for historical accuracy and social impact will be strengthened across all K-content support projects. Attention is focused on how far the repercussions of '21st Century Prince's Wife,' which succeeded in popularity but left the homework of historical awareness controversy, will extend.
