Background on Lee Hwi-jae's Casting for "Immortal Songs"

A PD for KBS2's 'Immortal Songs' stated in a phone call with OSEN on the 5th that Lee Hwi-jae's appearance is part of a 'Variety Star Special.' This marks Lee Hwi-jae's return to broadcast activities after approximately four years. The PD explained, "We were preparing for 'Immortal Songs' Variety Star King of Kings competition," and "We planned a special featuring individuals who, while not singers, have released albums." Lee Hwi-jae also shared that he decided to appear after discussions with 'Immortal Songs' went well, as he was considering various programs.

The PD drew a line, stating that he was not casting Lee Hwi-jae with the intention of helping him return to activities. He emphasized, "I feel burdened by the possibility that it might be perceived as if he is making a comeback through 'Immortal Songs'," adding, "We are absolutely not the ones opening the door for his return." However, he added that Lee Hwi-jae was cast considering his nationwide recognition and fame.

Regarding whether Lee Hwi-jae had been preparing with the intention of returning to broadcasting, the PD cautiously said, "It's my speculation, but perhaps that's why we were able to contact him." He emphasized that "Lee Hwi-jae is just one of ten teams," and was wary of this appearance being seen as a grand return or comeback.

The 'Immortal Songs' 2026 Entertainment Industry King of Kings special will feature Lee Hwi-jae, along with Jo Hye-ryeon, Hong Seok-cheon, Song Il-gook, Oh Man-seok, Kim Shin-young, and Park Sung-kwang, with filming scheduled for the 16th. PD Lee revealed the commonality among the cast members: "They are entertainers who, though not singers, have past experience releasing albums."
