Project Hail Mary: Korean Sci-Fi Space Rescue

The protagonist of the movie "Project Hail Mary," Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), appears at first glance to be a typical genius character, but he is a savior of the world and, at the same time, a person with the face of an ordinary individual. He is a character who lives in his own comfort, commuting to work by bicycle without any ambition to change the world or desire for fame. Because of his personality, he hesitates to step forward even when faced with a mission that holds the fate of humanity, not out of cowardice, but because he fears death and has not been trained to be so noble as to throw himself into a heroic narrative. More fundamentally, he shows a human side where his own life feels more important than the abstract word "humanity."

The characteristic that permeates Grace's psychology is scientific thinking. Even in extreme situations, he does not succumb to sentimentality and demonstrates an experimental attitude of observing, hypothesizing, and verifying. For him, science is more than just a professional skill; it is a way to endure fear, and the act of thinking itself is a survival skill.

However, the point where this movie deepens is the fact that even Grace is not complete with science alone. What ultimately changes him is not calculation, but relationships, specifically his encounter with the alien intelligence Rocky.

After meeting Rocky, Grace learns for the first time how to survive with someone else, and they solve problems together through a relationship where they fulfill each other's deficiencies. This relationship transcends friendship and is a metaphor for a pan-galactic collaboration, and through Rocky, Grace gains the sense that 'I can be someone indispensable to another.' Rocky becomes someone who alleviates Grace's loneliness and gives him a reason to live.

Through this transformation, Grace's choices change. While he initially hesitated to risk his life for humanity, in the latter half, he makes the choice to turn back for Rocky. This shows a human side where people change when faced with a specific face, rather than an abstract cause, suggesting that 'one friend' can be a more powerful ethical motivator than 'billions of people.'
