Park Bo Young Gold Land: Direct to Lead Actress Nominee

The Korea International Streaming Festival 2026 (KISF 2026) Global OTT Awards has been embroiled in controversy even before its commencement, surrounding the timing of work releases and the criteria for selecting nominees. Among fans, a debate is ongoing about whether it is fair to evaluate the acting of actors and the directing of directors for works that are not yet complete.

Recently, KISF 2026 announced its nominees in 14 categories. Among them, the Disney+ original 'Goldland' became the center of controversy after being included in major category nominations at the point of its fourth episode release. Lead actor Park Boyoung was nominated for Best Actress, and director Kim Sung-hoon was nominated for Best Director.

'Goldland', a total of 10 episodes, had only four episodes released at the time of the nomination announcement. This raised questions among drama fans about whether it is fair to evaluate acting and directing when the work is not even half-released. In particular, the fact that lead actress nominees Shin Hye-sun ('Lady Dua') and Kim Yoo-jung ('Dear X') were nominated for works that had already completed their full run added to the fairness controversy. Some fans criticized 'Goldland's nomination as premature, arguing that for genre dramas, the evaluation of character completeness and narrative can change depending on the latter half of the story, and the emotional arc of the actors and the completeness of the directing should be confirmed until the very end. Furthermore, there were criticisms that being nominated for major categories based solely on early buzz felt unfair in comparison to completed works.

On the other hand, there is also a counterargument that there are no issues with the regulations. According to KISF's eligibility criteria, works with at least one new episode aired between June 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026, are eligible for nomination. In light of this regulation, 'Goldland's nomination does not violate the rules.

Moreover, KISF 2026 is scheduled to be held on the 20th of next month, and 'Goldland' is scheduled to complete its full episode release by the end of this month. Therefore, during the final judging stage, it will be evaluated based on all episodes, just like the other nominees. Consequently, the industry views this controversy as an issue of perceived fairness regarding the timing of nomination selection. While there are no formal issues with eligibility, the fact that the work was not completed at the time of the nomination announcement was perceived as unbalanced by viewers. It is analyzed that this issue is particularly likely to be raised more significantly in the Best Actor and Best Director categories, which are closely related to the overall completeness of the work.
