Actor Kim Mu-yeol is gaining global popularity with the Netflix series 'Gyeongseong Creature,' and his past story of voluntarily enlisting despite being exempted from military service due to financial hardship is being re-examined.

Kim Mu-yeol was exempted from military service in 2010 for "difficulty in maintaining livelihood" but voluntarily enlisted as an active-duty soldier in 2012. At the time, his agency explained that although Kim Mu-yeol had an income of approximately 300 million won as the head of the household, he used the entire amount to pay for his father's medical expenses and debts, and actually lived in a shantytown.

In a past broadcast, Kim Mu-yeol revealed that his mother was scammed in a commercial property sale, which worsened the family's financial situation, and people even broke into their home, placing red stickers on their belongings. He also stated that he had done so many part-time jobs, such as delivery, distributing flyers, manual labor, and building security, that he couldn't even remember them all.

After his father suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, his younger brother enlisted in the military. As Kim Mu-yeol was the sole source of income, he was unable to enlist until his brother was discharged. Amidst these difficulties, Kim Mu-yeol supported his family and endured a tough period.

Meanwhile, the Netflix series 'Gyeongseong Creature,' starring Kim Mu-yeol, has been a huge hit, ranking first worldwide just three days after its release. This drama, based on a webtoon, depicts the activities of the Teachers' Rights Protection Bureau, established to protect the collapsed authority of teachers and the educational field.
