Netflix Breaks YA Genre Taboo
Global streaming platform Netflix will release its new series, "GIRIGO," on April 24, marking a new attempt to pioneer the Korean Young Adult (YA) horror genre. Unlike existing horror content that relied on adult narratives or traditional themes, "GIRIGO" actively utilizes the daily lives and digital environments of teenagers to add freshness. Following the release of its teaser, anticipation is growing with various interpretations and speculations, and the balance between genre experimentation and mainstream appeal is drawing attention.
"GIRIGO" features a setting that combines a wish-granting application with the deadly price of death. When a wish video is posted on the mysterious app "GIRIGO," any desire becomes reality, but it is followed by a curse that must be endured. Triggered by the sudden death of a friend, five high school students suspect a connection between the app and the incident, approaching the hidden truth. Horror and mystery build upon the emotional journey of youth struggling between reality and ideals, increasing the narrative's density. The copy, "Do you have a wish you'd die to make?" chillingly reveals the relationship between desire and its cost.

While past wish motifs relied on shrines or magical devices, "GIRIGO" uses a mobile app as an everyday and modern medium to bring horror closer to reality. This setting is expected to enhance viewer immersion by evoking a sense of "this could happen to me."

The series is directed by Director Park Yoon-seo, who has gained experience across genres, having served as the assistant director for "Kingdom" Season 2, co-directed Disney+'s "Moving," and worked as an assistant director on films like "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" and "The Mayor." Expectations are high for how his sophisticated directing skills and understanding of large-scale projects will create tension and rhythm in the new territory of YA horror.
The cast also boasts a fresh combination. New actors Jeon So-young, Kang Mina, Baek Sun-ho, Hyun Woo-seok, and Lee Hyo-je form the core of the drama, with Jeon So-nee and Noh Jae-won adding weight with their stable performances. Jeon So-young plays "Se-ah," who tracks clues to the incident, and Kang Mina plays "Na-ri," who denies supernatural phenomena, forming a conflict structure. The process of characters with different beliefs and desires making different choices amidst the same threat is expected to heighten the story's tension, and the harmony between the new and established actors will also be a crucial factor in enhancing the work's completeness.
