Bae Sung Jae & Kim Da Young: 14-Year Age Gap Marriage Opposition

Announcer-turned-broadcaster Bae Sung-jae and his wife Kim Da-young confessed that they faced opposition to their marriage from her family due to their 14-year age gap. The couple married in May of last year and recently joined the SBS variety show "Same Bed, Different Dreams Season 2 – You Are My Destiny" to reveal their newlywed life for the first time. Bae Sung-jae stated that they did not have a separate wedding ceremony, only gathering immediate family for a photo shoot and ring exchange.

Bae Sung-jae mentioned that he is 14 years older than his wife, Kim Da-young, and 11 years younger than his mother-in-law. He said with a laugh, "I wish my mother-in-law would speak to me comfortably, but I'm waiting because I'm worried that trying too hard to be comfortable might make her more uncomfortable." He added that his wife and mother-in-law have a 25-year age difference, and his mother and mother-in-law also have a 25-year age difference, making it feel like three generations are gathered when both families meet. Bae Sung-jae's mother reportedly dotes on her daughter-in-law and doesn't even let her do the dishes.

The behind-the-scenes story of the marriage opposition was also revealed. Kim Da-young recalled that her family was in an uproar as soon as she announced their relationship. A big argument, with shouting and crying, erupted in a household that usually had no conflicts. Her younger brother was particularly shocked and upset, saying that Bae Sung-jae's age was comparable to that of a company department head.

Despite her family's opposition, Kim Da-young stated, "This marriage is because we love each other, and I didn't want to make my husband kneel and apologize," so she personally gathered her family and gave a detailed briefing on why she decided to marry Bae Sung-jae. She persuaded them as if giving a UN speech, saying, "If it's a decision I've made, you should trust me," and explained that this helped the situation resolve smoothly. Bae Sung-jae added that although he had prepared many remarks, once he met his in-laws, he could only say, "I'm sorry."

Bae Sung-jae joined SBS as an announcer in 2006, left in 2021, and is now working as a freelancer. Kim Da-young joined SBS as an experienced announcer in 2021 but has since resigned. The couple met through the SBS variety show "Kick a Goal," and after dating for three years, they got married.
