He admitted that since their dating days, conversations had revolved solely around their children, and as the children grew up and began living their own lives, he found himself with nothing to talk about with his wife.

Dr. Oh Eun Young noted the wife's frequent use of the expression "굳이" (meaning "unnecessarily" or "going out of one's way") and diagnosed that there seemed to be a lack of motivation within the wife to grow closer to her husband. The wife admitted that she had given up on many things because improving her relationship with her husband seemed difficult, and expressed her honest feelings that she wanted to live her own life once the children became independent. In response, Dr. Oh defined this state as "emotional divorce," explaining that while the husband attempts to improve the relationship, the emotional distance between the couple is too great.

Although the husband cited his business failure as the cause of the family's rift, his wife and daughter pointed to his communication style as the fundamental reason for their discord. The wife stated that if her husband had succeeded in business, the family might have collapsed even sooner. Their daughter revealed that her father, despite having strong pride, had low self-esteem, leading him to use a communication style that belittled others, and that she herself had been deeply hurt by her father's words and actions.

Dr. Oh Eun Young pointed out that empathy is important in families, even when opinions differ, and that the husband's communication style makes his wife feel, "He doesn't acknowledge me." She also advised the husband to set aside his pride and emphasized the need for relationship improvement.
