British singer-songwriter Sam Smith, 33, has become engaged to his fashion designer boyfriend Christian Cowan, 32, according to U.S. entertainment outlet Page Six and others. The couple has been dating for about three years.

Before walking the red carpet, the two were seen discussing their engagement at a New York hotel. Sam Smith appeared at the Met Gala in an outfit personally designed by Cowan and wore a yellow diamond ring on their left ring finger. Cowan also wore a diamond ring.

Christian Cowan, through Sam Smith's Instagram, explained the outfit he designed, expressing his affection by saying, "A love letter to Erté and my love, Sam." The outfit was inspired by Art Deco designer Erté and is known to have incorporated 255,000 crystals and beads, with 2,000 hours of hand-stitching effort.

Sam Smith revealed in a 2019 broadcast that they are 'non-binary'. Non-binary refers to individuals who do not identify within the binary gender identities of male and female.
