Park Bo-young's dark turn, Lee Do-kyung's betrayal in Goldland

The Disney+ original series 'Goldland' is a crime thriller depicting the greed and betrayal of characters surrounding gold bars. It begins with Kim Hee-ju (Park Bo-young) driving with mysterious gold bars in a state of fear, and Kim Hee-ju, a security checkpoint employee at the airport, becomes a target of a smuggling organization after being asked by her lover Lee Do-kyung (Lee Hyun-wook) to smuggle 1 ton of gold bars. Director Kim Sung-hoon of the movie 'Confidential Assignment' and writer Hwang Jo-yoon of 'Oldboy' have joined forces, posing the question, "What if I had gold bars?" to depict the characters' greed and the resulting tension.

The drama delivers intense suspense through a car chase scene featured in the first episode. The scene where Park Yi-sa clings to Kim Hee-ju's car and smashes the window heightens the tension of the crime thriller to its peak. However, Kim Hee-ju, played by Park Bo-young, has been criticized for not leaving an initial impact. Contrary to expectations that Park Bo-young, who has primarily played good characters, would show a darkened side succumbing to desire in this work, she has so far been portrayed as a passive character who acts according to Lee Do-kyung's instructions. While Kim Hee-ju's internal transformation is likely to become a major narrative in the future, there are criticisms that the overall immersion is reduced because the charm of the key character in the early part is not brought to life, and Park Bo-young's charm is overshadowed.

Kim Hee-ju's line, "If it doesn't belong to anyone anyway, why shouldn't I have it?" reveals the character's dangerous decision to choose desire, raising the tension to its highest point. Furthermore, Park Bo-young's chillingly transformed eyes as she utters the word "Kill" powerfully show Kim Hee-ju's change after choosing an irreversible path, delivering a shock. The story, entangled with the choices, greed, and betrayal of characters consumed by desire, foreshadows unpredictable suspense.
