Italian luxury brand Prada has unveiled the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), worn underneath spacesuits for NASA's lunar exploration program, marking the first time a luxury brand has directly participated in spacesuit development. This collaboration was conducted with Axiom Space, a company developing space infrastructure, with Prada providing its expertise in materials and manufacturing technology.

The LCVG works by circulating cold water through a finely woven network of tubes within the fabric, absorbing the astronaut's body heat and releasing it into space via a portable life support system. Unlike existing cooling garments, it features a fully double cooling circuit for enhanced safety and includes a ventilation function that supplies fresh oxygen and expels carbon dioxide through separate tubes.

This LCVG is scheduled to be first deployed on the Artemis 4 mission, slated for launch in early 2028. In this collaboration, Prada was responsible for materials and manufacturing technologies, including advanced 3D modeling, high-performance knitting, and specialized fabrics, while Axiom Space was selected by NASA as the developer of the next-generation lunar exploration spacesuit.

Experts view Prada's move as the establishment of a tangible partnership beyond mere inspiration, analyzing it as a strategy to access the affluent market considering space travel and to connect the brand's image with forward-thinking ideas. This is the first instance of a luxury brand directly participating in spacesuit development, amidst companies like Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin and Elon Musk's SpaceX venturing into space tourism.

While other luxury brands have shown interest in space travel, it remains uncertain whether they will enter the sector in the same way as Prada. In the luxury industry, pioneering efforts and trendsetting are crucial, and it is anticipated that competing brands will likely enter the space industry through new and different approaches compared to Prada's.
